Before You Build, Think Light!

Beautiful Homes Begin with Beautiful Light - and Good Timing Too.

You might think a great lighting scheme relies solely on beautiful fixtures or a dramatic chandelier. But here’s the truth: the most important ingredient in successful lighting design is timing.

Lighting is one of the most powerful elements in a home, yet it’s often an afterthought — addressed too late, when the ceilings are already in and the layout is fixed.

The best lighting design starts early, right alongside architecture. Getting the timing right can save you stress, money, and missed opportunities.

Lighting Is Part of the Architecture — Not Just Decoration

Lighting isn’t just about aesthetics. It shapes the way a space looks, feels, and functions. It sets the mood, enhances flow, and brings your home to life — even before furniture or finishes are added. It plays a similar role to windows and skylights as they let the natural light in. They become essential parts of the house, just like artificial lighting.

I often compare lighting to a home’s circulatory system: invisible but essential. When it’s thoughtfully integrated, the space feels alive — even when stripped back to its bones.

The Golden Window: Right At the Start of Your Project

The ideal time to get in touch with a lighting designer is when you appoint your architect — while layouts are still evolving and the structure is flexible. This is the moment when the spaces that will become your home — the hallways, staircases, fireplaces, bow windows, and more — are shaped. Thoughtful lighting, planned early, gives these elements the chance to become not just functional, but truly interesting.

Early involvement allows us to:

  • Integrate lighting seamlessly into the architecture.

  • Highlight key features like arches, staircases, bow windows, or garden views.

  • Plan zones, switching, and control systems (smart or traditional).

  • Influence ceiling details and finishes to support the final lighting vision.

Waiting too long means working around fixed decisions — and that often limits creative potential or results in expensive changes.

When lighting is part of the conversation from day one, everything feels more considered and connected.

Clear Communication is Better Execution

A good plan is only as good as its execution. That’s why I stay involved throughout the installation — working closely with the electrician to ensure the vision is implemented exactly as intended.

There’s no point in producing clear drawings if the people on site aren’t fully informed. I believe in open, ongoing communication — because collaboration is what brings the design to life.

Even small gaps in communication can lead to problems. For instance, a cable might be installed in the right place, but without understanding the purpose of the fitting — whether it’s wall-mounted, recessed, or surface — the electrician may not leave enough slack, depth, or fixing allowance. A detail like an uplight recessed in a step might be wired too early, before finishes are finalized, and end up misaligned.

These aren’t careless mistakes — they happen when a good electrician doesn’t have the full picture. My role on site is to bridge that gap: to answer technical questions, double-check details before it’s too late, and ensure every fitting performs — not just electrically, but visually, atmospherically, and as part of the architecture.

The Ordering of Fittings - A Time-Consuming Process

Once the lighting plan is approved, choosing and sourcing the actual fittings takes time. It involves specifying each fitting, checking technical details, and getting everything approved by the client. Some designer or international pieces can have lead times of 3–12 weeks — sometimes longer.

There’s a lot to consider when specifying light fittings. Beyond lighting performance, the client’s personal preferences are key. The finish is especially important: some clients prefer antique brass, while others want fittings fully finished in white. Some favour the minimal look of fully recessed fittings, while others like a visible bezel in a gold tone.

So both design and finish matter, just as much as the technical performance. When decisions are delayed or rushed, it often leads to poor quality, compromises, and higher costs.

By selecting fittings early, we aim to avoid unnecessary delays or fast-tracked shipping costs, giving the electrician enough time to prepare wiring and dimming infrastructure.

Time is the Best Ally for Great Lighting

Clients who bring in a lighting designer early consistently see better results. They make more confident decisions, avoid costly errors, and create homes that feel exactly as they imagined: layered, calm, and full of atmosphere.

I care deeply about each project and about the people behind them. I know how much energy, money, and emotion goes into building or renovating a home. My goal is to ensure that all of that effort is reflected in the final experience — not just in how it looks, but in how it feels to live in.

The Transformative Power of Lighting

Lighting can truly transform a space. It can create a sense of warmth and comfort, or it can evoke a feeling of elegance and sophistication. The right lighting can highlight architectural features, draw attention to artwork, or create a cozy nook for relaxation.

Imagine walking into a room where the lighting is perfectly balanced. The soft glow invites you in, making you feel at home. It’s not just about illumination; it’s about creating an experience.

When I design lighting, I think about how it will interact with the space throughout the day. Natural light changes with the sun's movement, and I aim to complement that with artificial lighting. This dynamic interplay can enhance the mood and functionality of each room.

Conclusion: Embrace the Light

In conclusion, the journey to beautiful lighting begins with good timing and thoughtful planning. By involving a lighting designer early in the process, you’re setting the stage for a home that feels just right.

Let’s embrace the transformative power of light together. It’s not just about seeing; it’s about feeling.
